Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University A land-grant institution
The Agricultural Technology Program at Virginia Tech is pleased to announce that it will accept SAT scores in addition to the Compass Placement Test scores to fulfill current admissions requirements. The preferred score range for the SAT is 450 for reading, 450 for writing, and 450 for math or better. The SAT is not required for the 2008 incoming class but is an option. This will benefit students by allowing them to take the test closer to home and to participate in SAT preparation courses if they need to improve one or more scores and retake the test.
We will require the SAT test beginning with the 2009 incoming class and will discontinue use of Compass for admissions purposes. Community colleges are moving away from the Compass test and are not administering our test when requested. It is a burden for several of our potential students to have to travel to Blacksburg to take the test one or more times. The SAT is the nationally recognized standard and has many resources available to students who need additional assistance improving their scores. The SAT organization is also better equipped to administer the test to students who qualify for accommodations.
Students who have attended past Open House events have been encouraged to take the Compass Placement Test as freshman, sophomores, and juniors and have been told these tests will count for future admissions. We will honor that commitment. We will also allow other students to take the Compass Test on any of the remaining dates and count those for future admissions. We will not administer the Compass Placement Test after May 3, 2008. Students requesting accommodations should register for the test at least seven days prior to the test date.
